Wedding Photographer Opinions: What Couples Should Know Before Hiring a Photographer

A skilled wedding photographer should be able to photograph an entire wedding day consistently, not just produce a few impressive images. Weddings move through many lighting conditions and fast-changing environments, which means technical skill and quick decision making are essential. Reviewing a full wedding gallery is one of the best ways couples can see whether a photographer can deliver strong results from start to finish.

most Common Mistake I see

Many couples choose a wedding photographer based on a handful of beautiful photos they see online.

The problem is that a wedding photographer’s true skill isn’t revealed in their best ten images. It’s revealed in the full wedding gallery from start to finish.

Weddings involve constantly changing lighting conditions, fast-moving moments, and unpredictable situations. A photographer needs to be able to adapt quickly and produce strong images throughout the entire day.

When couples only see curated highlight photos, they often miss the details that reveal whether a photographer can deliver consistent results.

Why Couples Should Always Review a Full Wedding Gallery

A full gallery shows how the photographer handles every part of the day, including:

• getting ready photos in indoor lighting
• outdoor ceremonies in bright sunlight
• portraits in changing light conditions
• indoor receptions with dim lighting
• fast-moving dance floor moments

Looking through a complete wedding gallery allows couples to see whether the photographer can maintain quality throughout the entire event instead of only in ideal situations.

Do they own the proper equipment?
What kind of flash do they like to use when the sun goes down? Can they document a sparkler exit?

Why Wedding Photography Trends Can Be Misleading

Photography trends change constantly.

Editing styles that feel modern today can look dated in a few years. Social media also encourages photographers to share only their most dramatic images instead of showing the full story of a wedding day.

This can create the impression that a photographer consistently produces images in perfect lighting conditions, even though a real wedding day involves many different environments.

Great wedding photography isn’t just about producing a few standout images. It’s about creating a complete gallery that feels natural, balanced, and clearly lit from beginning to end.

Common Issues That Appear When Skill Is Inconsistent

When photographers rely too heavily on trends or selective portfolios, certain technical issues often appear throughout the gallery.

These are details couples may not immediately notice when looking at a few images online.

Examples

Unnatural Skin Tones

Heavy editing styles can sometimes create orange or green skin tones. My opinion is these photographers likely rely on presets while color correcting. Consistent color correction is essential for creating photographs that look natural and timeless. I do not believe in relying on a copy and paste present across all locations.

Deep Shadows Across Faces

Weddings involve difficult lighting situations, that is a given. Photographers shouldn’t deliver photos with black holes for eyes or deep shadows from overdoing the contrast in their editing. If you like a moody editing style, but sure to check the less brightly lit sections in a full wedding gallery.

Crooked Horizon Lines

Small compositional details matter. Crooked horizon lines or tilted images can make photographs feel visually unbalanced. There is a current trend (that is just a throwback trend) that embraces the crooked composition. Just be sure it makes sense and adds to the moment instead of the crooked look for the sake of the trend. Sometimes the crooked shot is just from unawareness instead of style.

Background Lines Intersecting the Subject

Another common issue I see in wedding photos is when horizon lines or background elements intersect through someone’s head or body. Experienced photographers pay close attention to these details while shooting. For example, if a couple is posed in front of a lake, the line in which the water and sky meet should not pass through the couple’s heads.

Uncomfortable Body Language

Many people worry about feeling awkward in photos. A skilled photographer helps couples relax and provides natural guidance so that body language feels comfortable and authentic. I’ll tell you what to do with your hands.

In-Between Smiles

Being able to read peoples’ facial micro-expressions is a skill I believe some people have and some just don’t. A mistake I see often is photographers choosing the ‘best shot’ from their memory cards based on the background or composition, but the client will be most concerned about how THEY look in the photo. If they’re smile is at 70%, the viewer will feel that.
