Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Wedding in Denver
The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is one of Denver's most beautiful locations for a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony. Located near the Colorado State Capitol, this historic church features incredible Gothic architecture, soaring ceilings, colorful stained glass windows, and an atmosphere that feels completely different from most Colorado wedding venues.
As a Denver wedding photographer, I love the opportunity to photograph ceremonies in spaces with this much architectural character. A cathedral wedding requires an understanding of the ceremony, the lighting, and the church's photography restrictions, but the results can be absolutely beautiful.

Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Wedding FAQ
The Cathedral Basilica is located in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood, close to downtown Denver and the Colorado State Capitol.
Unlike traditional wedding venues that host ceremonies and receptions, the Basilica is an active Catholic church where couples celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage.
It's an especially meaningful location for Catholic couples who want a religious ceremony surrounded by beautiful architecture and a strong sense of tradition.
Marriage Ceremony at the Basilica- From Website
How Much Does a Cathedral Basilica Wedding Cost?
According to the Cathedral's published wedding information, the wedding fee is currently $2,000, plus a $750 security deposit.
The wedding fee includes the use of the Cathedral, staff, a security officer, an organist, and a cantor. Marriage preparation expenses are separate.
The Cathedral also requires a $500 nonrefundable down payment as part of the wedding fee when officially scheduling the ceremony.
Because wedding policies and prices can change, I recommend confirming these details directly with the Cathedral.
What Makes This Denver Cathedral So Beautiful?
The Cathedral Basilica was designed in the French Gothic architectural style and completed in the early 1900s.
Some of its most impressive features include:
Two towering spires reaching approximately 210 feet
Seventy-five stained glass windows
A vaulted ceiling rising approximately 68 feet
Detailed marble columns and altars
A beautiful central aisle
Limestone and granite construction
Historic religious artwork and architectural details
The height of the ceilings and the scale of the building make wedding photographs here feel particularly grand.
I especially appreciate how much of the church's atmosphere can be captured in a wide ceremony photograph. The architecture becomes an important part of the story without taking attention away from the couple.
Can You Get Married at the Cathedral Basilica in Denver?
Yes. The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception hosts Catholic wedding ceremonies for couples who meet the Church's marriage requirements.
Couples must begin their marriage preparation through their own Catholic parish before contacting the Cathedral to schedule their wedding.
The Archdiocese of Denver requires an eight-month marriage preparation period, so this is something you'll want to begin well before your preferred wedding date.
When Can You Have a Wedding at the Cathedral Basilica?
The Cathedral currently lists Saturday wedding ceremonies at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (The church also generally avoids scheduling weddings during Advent and Lent.)
Since Catholic wedding ceremonies follow a different process from booking a traditional wedding venue, be sure to contact the Cathedral early and discuss available dates with the parish.
Catholic Wedding Photography at the Cathedral Basilica
Photographing a Catholic wedding ceremony is a little different from photographing a wedding at a traditional event venue.
There are important moments throughout the ceremony that deserve to be documented respectfully, and photographers have to be aware of where they are permitted to stand and move.
The Cathedral allows photography during the wedding ceremony, but photographers must follow the instructions of the officiating priest or deacon and the wedding coordinator.
Depending on the ceremony, there may be restrictions regarding flash photography, camera placement, movement, and photographs inside the church before or after the wedding.
I think the best approach is to work quietly, anticipate important moments, and allow the couple and their guests to stay focused on the ceremony.
Understanding the Lighting Inside the Cathedral
One of the biggest considerations for any indoor church wedding is lighting.
The Cathedral has beautiful stained glass windows and a bright interior, but the lighting can still vary considerably throughout the building.
A photographer needs to be comfortable adjusting camera settings quickly while working within any restrictions on flash or additional lighting.
This is one reason I always encourage couples to look through complete wedding galleries before hiring a photographer.
You want someone who can photograph the entire ceremony consistently, not just capture a few beautiful portraits when the lighting is perfect.
Can You Take Wedding Portraits Inside the Cathedral?
The Cathedral has specific rules regarding photographs inside the church outside the ceremony itself.
Their published photography guidelines restrict posed photography before and after the ceremony, with limited exceptions for a wedding-party group photograph.
Make sure you discuss any desired altar, family, or wedding-party portraits with the church coordinator before planning them into your wedding photography timeline.
Fortunately, there are also beautiful outdoor wedding portrait locations nearby.

Below are photographs from a real wedding ceremony I documented at the Cathedral Basilica in Denver.
The historic architecture, stained glass windows, and dramatic scale of the church create a beautiful setting for Catholic wedding photography.
My goal when photographing a ceremony like this is to capture the meaningful moments while allowing the service to unfold naturally.
Colorado State Capitol Wedding Portraits at Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park
After the ceremony, we took the couple's wedding portraits at Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park near the Colorado State Capitol.
This is such a great option for couples getting married at the Cathedral Basilica who want a second look for their portraits without leaving downtown Denver.
The Capitol-area setting offers a completely different backdrop from the Gothic architecture inside the Cathedral.
Instead of church interiors and stained glass, you have the historic Colorado State Capitol building, landscaped public spaces, and classic downtown Denver architecture.
I love being able to give couples variety in their wedding gallery, especially when the ceremony and portraits can happen within the same general part of the city.
Why Consider the Colorado State Capitol for Wedding Photos?
For couples planning a downtown Denver Catholic wedding, the Capitol area is worth considering for portraits because it offers:
Historic Denver architecture
A recognizable Colorado landmark
Landscaped outdoor spaces
A different setting from indoor church photographs
Opportunities for both formal and relaxed couple portraits
A location close to the Cathedral Basilica
It's a lovely contrast to the traditional church ceremony, and it helps tell a fuller story of a wedding day in Denver.
Planning Wedding Photography for a Downtown Denver Catholic Ceremony
When you're planning a wedding at the Cathedral Basilica, I recommend thinking about your photography timeline a little differently.
The ceremony itself has a scheduled time and religious structure, and you'll want to work around any photography guidelines provided by the church.
If you're planning portraits afterward, consider how much time you want to spend photographing the two of you before traveling to your reception.
I offer simplified hourly wedding photography coverage because I like giving couples flexibility. Whether you need someone to photograph your Catholic ceremony, family photographs where permitted, and a short portrait session, or you're planning a longer wedding day, your photography coverage should reflect your priorities.
You shouldn't have to build an entire wedding timeline around a photography package.

About Heather
My Approach
I photograph weddings in a candid, relaxed style. Instead of heavy posing, I focus on helping couples feel comfortable so their photos reflect what the day actually felt like.
The Kind of Weddings I Love
I’m especially drawn to chill weddings, low stress ceremonies where couples care more about meaningful moments than a big production. When people feel relaxed and present, the best photos happen naturally.
What It's Like to Work With Me
Couples often tell me they were worried about feeling awkward in photos, but once they realize I’m paying attention to the little details and guiding when needed, they relax quickly. That’s when the most genuine moments appear.
